LE MOT DE…
↘ Anlam de Coster, Director of Zeyrek Çinili Hamam, Istanbul
Anlam de Coster discusses the curatorial vision behind transforming this 16th-century Ottoman monument into a space dedicated to contemporary artistic interventions. Located in the Zeirek district, one of Istanbul’s UNESCO World Heritage areas, the hamam was originally designed by Sinan and commissioned by Barbarossa. Once richly decorated with İznik tiles, it is now reactivated as a site for artistic experimentation before its restoration. The program draws on the symbolic and social dimensions of bathing rituals, understood as processes of transformation, surrender, and introspection. Through a series of site-specific projects, artists explore myth-making and material practices to propose a form of spirituality that is not religious, but universal, open, and collective.
