↘ GERTA XHAFERAJ
How do private memories echo collective trauma?
Gerta Xhaferaj’s childhood was captured in hours of footage. But in the frames, something lingers: floral images inserted by her father, to censor moments too blurry, possibly reflecting his experiences during Albania’s turbulent transition.
During her residency with the Vila 31 – Art Explora programme, Gerta pieces together personal archives, interviews, and the remnants of Albania’s authoritarian past. From the former dictator’s vila to the city’s hidden tunnels she explores how memory, identity, and control are woven into the landscape, and into the stories we inherit.
